Get to the chopper

Get to the chopper

Rummaging through an old box of photos the other day, I came across these; crusty old transparencies, from a time before drones, and a few snaps from a project in the early 00's. There seemed to be quite a bit more money sloshing around back then, so when budget permitted, I used to shoot a little bit in helicopters. It was without question hugely expensive, and always took out a fairly decent chunk of any budget, but it was so much fun. There was a company called Flight Logistics that used to operate out of Pinewood; very nice people they were, and I always thought what a fun job and exciting job theirs was. They’d turn up with a truck load of remote control m

Giving birth

Giving birth

Just to clarify, I’m not suggesting for a minute that I have or ever will have (for obvious anatomical reasons) any idea of what that might actually feel like, although I did once have kidney stones which despite being horrifically unpleasant and apparently the closest in terms of pain levels, as any man will get to actually giving birth, it's probably nothing like it. But I digress and metaphorically speaking this has been a fairly easy ‘birth’ but one not without a certain degree of anxiety. Funny thing when you set a project out in to the world. It's a not a dissimilar degree of anxiety to when you pack your kid off to their first day at school. How are

Musical musings

Musical musings

Throughly enjoyed incorporating one of my other loves on this last little project. Much like film and photography, music has occupied a significant space in my life. And as necessity is the mother of invention, rather than paying for some ubiquitous library music, it just made sense to get creative and write and record some simple pieces to sit underneath this little YouTube mini documentary - as if I didn't already have enough to do in a short space of time. So flicking through the sample library, I noticed that some had been recorded at AIR studios in the Lyndhurst Hall, to make use of the unique acoustics this incredible space offers. So it reminded me of a pr

I made a thing

I made a thing

Mixing work and pleasure again on a project that came about quite by chance. I met Mark Fenner, through my mate Anthony. I was on my way back from Portugal a few years back now, and it was suggested that I make a pitstop and say hi, oh and chuck the rods out for the night at his lake. We became friends and I have been back many times since, principally for a social but I also chucked some of my camera gear in the car, just because. I didn't set out to make anything of these socials, as I often don't want to bring my working life into something I have always associated as a pastime, and something to get away from work. But at some point, I began to document the proce

Return to the Avon

Return to the Avon

I had forgotten just how much I love this river. Must be over fifteen years, maybe more, since I last fished here and I'm so happy to be back and away from the madness that is modern carp fishing. Not expecting too much this afternoon on my first visit back, more of an exploratory mission, and the water is carrying quite a bit of colour, but I'm just grateful to be here. I was chatting with a friend, trying to recollect when we first fished the river and I think it was probably the very late nineties, early noughties. I was formally introduced to it by another friend who had moved down there to work on a renovation project on a beautiful house right on the river

Guadiana

Guadiana

A few days recce on the amazing Guadiana in Portugal. So much interesting and untouched water to explore. There’s 260km’s of it in Portugal alone, so not even scratching the surface of this incredible river and its different barbel species.

Norway

Norway

Seems like September is a good month for mixing fishing and filming after all. In Norway shooting and directing for an interesting documentary, so thought it rude not to extend my stay to explore one of Norway's amazing rivers for a few days. I found myself on the Glomma in search of one of my favourite species, the grayling. The Glomma is just the most incredible river and there's something about this terrain that really resonates, probably stirring my inner Canadian. You can wade for miles as I did, with nothing but the occasional sound of moose for company, and the odd grayling, although only small ones for me this time. I can't wait to re visit this trul

Fishing and filming

Fishing and filming

Not often I get to mix work and play but back on the bank with my camera, filming for Joe Morgan's YouTube channel, Carp Angle. A fun three days, even if the weather wasn't great and I wasn't really able to wet a line myself, but a pleasure none the less with the hospitable Manor Carp fishery folk. A week's editing and hopefully, the programme will be something people will enjoy when it goes live.

Redmire June 2023

Redmire June 2023

Back at Redmire. I have fished this wondrous and historical venue many times over the years. I was first there in the late 80s, shortly after the Carp Society took over its custodianship. I'm here this time, not to fish, but for a different reason, before the season has even opened, and have been allowed to camp overnight next to the pool, a real privilege.
